Inspired by the designers of Art Deco, we devoted our intention to the craft of straw marquetry. The doors of this delicate sideboard are covered with a checkerboard pattern of dyed rye straw.

Straw marquetry is an almost forgotten craftsmanship that is only practiced by a handful of workshops worldwide today.

This extraordinary decoration technique had its last renaissance during the time of Art Deco in France. Well-known designers such as Jean Michel Frank and André Groult created individual pieces of furniture and accessories as well as entire room furnishings including wall coverings in straw.

Rye straw specially grown for this marquetry technique is dyed, cut and flattened. The flat straw strips can then be glued onto a substrate one at a time. Due to a natural wax layer on the straw the resulting pattern features an almost metallic sheen. As a result of the complex preparation of the raw material and the time-consuming process of the technique, straw marquetry is a luxury that has alway been exceptionally rare. Fascinated by this old technique, we transformed a piece of furniture from the 1960s into a unique piece of great character.
